This was the day Mom ran in "Max's Run for a Reason," which is not named
after me, believe it or not. Actually, it was a 5K run named after a kid named Max Best who
died about two years ago as a result of SUDC - Sudden Unexplained Death in Children. This is
similar to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), except it strikes kids older than one year.
Essentially, seemingly perfectly healthy kids just go to sleep at night and don't ever wake up.
Scary! Anyway, the run was a benefit for the SUDC program that promotes awareness and seeks
understanding of the syndrome in order (hopefully) to prevent it. This was the second year
of the event, and it has raised many thousands of dollars for the cause, thanks to LOTS of
participation from individuals and local businesses.
Mom decided to participate a couple of months ago, almost immediately after I was born. She wanted to have an event to inspire her to get back into running shape as quickly as she could, and also when she found this particular run, she thought it was calling her name. Since she's been sick w/ a bad cold for the last couple of weeks, she almost decided not to do it, but luckily she followed through, because it was a fun event. Dad and I went down to the race location at the end - the race was around Lake Harriet - and we hung out and chatted with people. It was a beautiful sunny day, even though it was cold. Dad bundled me up and I was fine. The pictures here are before and after shots of Mom. The before shot shows off her fabulous "morning hair." She often wakes up with hair similar to this, and since I usually don't give her the opportunity to take a shower, the "fix" is usually a hat. The after-race pic is taken in our backyard. I'm still bundled up, and Mom's still got her hat on. |
